Dental Bridge
Mooresville, NC

Dental bridge being placed in diagram of lower teethTooth loss is more common than many people realize. About two thirds of adults have lost a tooth from decay by late adulthood. Losing a tooth or multiple teeth can come with a lot of frustrations including how you chew, your speech, and changes to your jaw. Fortunately, today there are so many options available to replace missing teeth.

If you are missing one or more teeth, our staff at Parkway Dentistry at Langtree can restore the tooth and return your mouth to health. We specialize in a variety of tooth replacement solutions, including the placement of a dental bridge.

Regardless of which restoration you choose, we understand it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible to avoid a cascade of increasingly problematic oral health issues. During your consultation, we can go over the options that will suit your needs specific to you.

What Is A Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is used to place false teeth where teeth are missing. To do this, we anchor a device to either a healthy tooth or a dental implant with the false tooth attached. There are multiple types of dental bridges including:
•  Traditional Bridge: The most commonly used bridge is known as the traditional bridge. It consists of two dental crowns linked together by a false tooth, also known as a pontic. The two crowns on either end are used to anchor the bridge, they go over some combination of healthy teeth or tooth implants to secure it permanently in place. A traditional bridge can be used to replace one, or multiple missing teeth provided there are adequate anchors in place.
•  Maryland Bridge: A Maryland dental bridge attaches differently than the traditional bridge. Sometimes referred to as a bonded bridge, this system uses a false tooth that has metal wings extended from its sides. The metal wings are bonded to the backside of anchor teeth.
•  Cantilever Bridge: The Cantilever bridge is similar to the traditional bridge, but it uses only one anchor. Though it may be acceptable for front teeth, we generally do not recommend this bridge for back teeth as it has less support.

Implant Retained Dental Bridge

A dental bridge requires a healthy anchor to be attached. Sometimes a patient does not have a healthy tooth to serve as an anchor. A dental implant can provide that necessary anchor. A dental implant is a titanium or ceramic post that we can secure directly in the jawbone to serve as a firm anchor for a prosthetic, including a dental bridge.

Benefits Of A Dental Bridge

A dental bridge not only restores a missing tooth, it restores harmony to the working pieces of your mouth. Your teeth are part of a system, and when one piece is missing, it throws things out of whack. Missing teeth can cause changes to the way you chew, changes to your speech, it can leave room for neighboring teeth to move in an uncontrolled fashion, and it can lead to bone loss in your jaw. After the loss of a few teeth, the changes can even be apparent in your facial shape. A dental bridge will restore your smile to a more beautiful, and healthier state.

Most bridges are fabricated using porcelain or ceramic. These materials offer unmatched cosmetic advantages, matching the look of your natural teeth. We strive to color-match with your natural teeth, and they are textured to mimic the appearance of your enamel. The result is a new restoration that is virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth. Additionally, your new bridge prevents neighboring teeth from shifting, while equally distributing the forces of your bite. If you want to restore your ability to chew and speak properly with a beautiful restoration, a dental bridge may be right for you!
