Oral Care Tips for Seniors

Posted on 4/11/2022 by Parkway Dentistry at Langtree
Oral Care Tips for SeniorsIt's no secret that oral care is important at any age, but it's particularly crucial for seniors. Unfortunately, many older adults neglect their teeth and gums due to various factors, ranging from diminished dexterity to a lack of access to quality dental care. If you're a senior looking for advice on how to keep your mouth healthy, read on! This post will outline some basic tips for taking care of your oral health.

Brushing your teeth

It's important to brush your teeth at least twice a day - after breakfast and before bed. If you can, brush after every meal. Be sure to use a soft toothbrush, as this will be gentler on your gums. When brushing, be sure to reach all tooth surfaces, including the back and tongue. Use circular motions and gentle pressure - you shouldn't have to scrub too hard!

If you have difficulty using a regular toothbrush, electric toothbrushes can do the work for you. Special brushes are designed for people with arthritis or other conditions that make it difficult to grip a traditional toothbrush.

Flossing

Flossing is equally important as brushing - in fact, it's recommended that you floss once a day. Flossing removes plaque and bacteria from between your teeth, where a toothbrush can't reach. Be sure to use gentle up-and-down motions and avoid sawing back and forth across your gums. If flossing is difficult for you, there are many dental flosses designed for people with different needs.

Dental checkups

It's important to see your dentist for a checkup at least once a year. During this exam, your dentist will look for signs of gum disease or other oral health problems. Depending on your individual situation, they may also recommend teeth cleanings more often than once a year.

You can keep your mouth healthy and avoid common oral health problems by following these simple tips. Remember - it's never too late to start taking care of your teeth! If you have any questions about oral care, talk to your dentist or another healthcare professional.
