Bridges Vs. Dental Implants

Posted on 2/7/2022 by Parkway Dentistry at Langtree
Bridges Vs. Dental ImplantsWhen you lose a tooth or multiple teeth, it can drastically affect your self-esteem and smile and make it challenging to eat certain foods. Whether genetics, injury, or gum disease caused you to have missing teeth, it's essential to replace them, so you maintain your mouth's function and keep it as healthy as possible. Fortunately, there are many options available to restore your smile. Two popular tooth replacement options available now are tooth-supported bridges and dental implants.

Tooth Supported Bridge

A tooth-supported bridge is used with two neighboring teeth to provide support for the new replacement tooth. The adjacent teeth are shaved down a little, and the bridge is cemented on top. Bridges can last for several years, and the procedure is completed in just a few weeks. However, since the supporting teeth have to be modified for installation, they are more vulnerable to recession and decay.

Dental Implants

A dental implant replaces the tooth root that is surgically installed into the bone. Once the healing process is completed, an implant crown resembling a natural tooth is placed. Dental implants have become a standard in tooth replacement because they are a permanent solution for missing teeth. Dental implants look natural and function the same as your natural teeth. They can last a lifetime. The adjacent teeth surrounding the dental implants remain intact, and bone loss is not a concern. However, dental implants are more expensive upfront than tooth-supporting bridges, and not everyone is a good candidate for dental implants. Implants can fail for those people on specific medications or those who smoke. No matter what option you decide to go with, both are suitable methods of tooth replacement for people with one or more missing teeth in their mouth and can provide a new full smile.
