Dangers Associated with an Untreated Dental Abscess

Posted on 7/7/2020 by LDAoffice
Dangers Associated with an Untreated Dental AbscessWhen you have infected gums or teeth, we say that you have a dental abscess. When most people feel that there is a problem in their mouth, they will often ignore the issue and hope that it goes away all on its own. The problem might go away without any residual effects, or it might be the entryway to a much more painful and complicated world. The mouth has a lot of nerves that are interconnected with other areas of the head and neck. As such, dental problems often metastasize and bring on a whole lot of issues that weren't there before. Here are some of the dangers of ignoring a dental abscess.

Infecting the Surrounding Bone

The mandible and maxilla facial bones are instrumental in keeping our teeth intact and in place. However, these bones do not tolerate infections as well as other bones in the body. An unchecked infection often cripples the bone's integrity, in which case it will have to be removed to contain the infection. In most cases, even if the replacement is unnecessary, the weakened bone structure might find it challenging to keep your teeth in place.

Loss of Teeth

When we catch an abscessed tooth on time, we can perform root canal therapy and top you off with a crown to save the tooth. When a patient leaves the infection unchecked for extended periods, endodontic treatment may not be possible. In such cases, we have to remove the tooth entirely and replace it with dental implants; that is if the bone structure underneath is uncompromised.

Sinus and Soft Tissue Infection

The roots of many upper teeth often extend into where the sinuses reside. When unchecked bacteria are in the mouth, it might reach the sinuses and cause an infection. What's more, the infection to surrounding tissue can bring about halitosis and facial cellulite, which are often very uncomfortable and painful.

Whenever you feel a problem in your mouth that doesn't go away in a few days, always make a point to schedule an appointment with us as soon as you can. We can catch an infection in its infancy and thereby deal with it without any complications.
